Simon Hurst

Simon Hurst is a chartered accountant who has been involved in computer software for the accountancy profession for the past 30 years. He is the proprietor of The Knowledge Base, an organisation that provides IT training and consultancy to practising accountants. Simon has lectured on Excel and other Microsoft applications for organisations such as the ICAEW and the ACCA, and contributed to several significant spreadsheet-related ICAEW publications. He has also had a book published on the use of Excel for working with financial data.

    I enjoyed certain elements of the course but I thought it could do with more visual presentations in the form of video, especially for explaining more complicated and advanced functions. I found it very difficult to follow some pieces of the course where it was just explained in text. Visual presentation in the form of showing how the formula is arrived at would have been much more beneficial than reading it in text. Granted there were some very good videos, I just feel like the course would have benefited from more.

    The first two modules focused on very simple formulae that I already knew. The second two modules however showed great insight and examples on how better I can use excel such as power query. Some of the reading sections had screenshots of excel that were very small. Zooming in sorted the issue but it detracts from the overall experience and ease of use of the course.

    There were some useful tips here about excel and formatting that I was not aware of. However, for the more complicated issues e.g. Power Query and Power BI the course only provider a taster (which is not a problem) and will probably need additional courses to fully understand the topic.

Also, the Excel spreadsheets from the examples are downloadable. It would be ideal if the course could have longer expiry date rather than 3 months for the users to revise particularly for software program such as this. Especially if someone is new to the software/functions of Excel taught.

    The video clips were presented in a very dull manner. The part of the screen that contained the actual spreadsheets being demonstrated was far too small and it was almost impossible to read the figures and follow what was going on. He didn’t really explain how to get into Power BI

    Initially though it may be too basic, as I’ve been in industry for over a decade, but I’m glad I did it, as even if it went over basics, there is always small details you miss when you basic taught excel to yourself. It also taught new formula I hadn’t previously encountered.
