About the course

Regular company accounts and charity accounts are very different. They have different financial statements and different laws governing them. Accounting and audit issues in charities are complex and have become increasingly specialised in recent years.

This course demystifies the accounts of charities and ensures you are equipped to deal with the rules and regulations that apply. It gives an overview of charity reporting and highlights some of the pitfalls to avoid when preparing and approving charity financial statements.

This course only covers UK financial statements

Contents

Module 1: Charity law, reporting frameworks and independent examinations

Explore the legal and regulatory framework governing charities, including the Charities Act 2022 and the financial reporting requirements for charitable organisations. Explore how to prepare and present a Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA), balance sheet and cash flow statement, including the principles of fund accounting and the presentation of charity accounts.

Module 3: The roles of charity auditors and independent examiners

Explore the different responsibilities of independent examiners and auditors, and the distinction between an independent examination and a statutory audit. Understand the requirements across England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, including examination procedures, audit responsibilities and reporting obligations.

Module 4: Dual registration, anti-money laundering and reporting obligations

Examine more complex issues affecting charities, including dual registration across UK jurisdictions and anti-money laundering responsibilities. 6. Paul Camp –

Didn’t give a 5 as a bit light on content

  7. Suzanne Pritchard –

Very interesting and helpful, but there were a couple of typos that should have been picked up as they changed the meaning – one question asked ‘which countries’ but the answer was a single country

  8. Georgia Wilderink –

I feel that not a lot goes into the actual accounting for charities – more focussed on the auditing of charities. What would each ‘income’ stream or activity be seen as etc?

  9. Monica Muchena –

Very good and informative course. I learnt quite a lot of new things which I did not know about charity accounting, registration and external scrutiny.

  10. Chamberlain Chitagu –

    Eye opening and informative

  12. Juliet Mercer –

  13. Elaine Curtis –

My only issue was that it related to UK legislation and I am in the republic of Ireland so although most parts similar I would have like parts under Irish legislation

  14. Rebecca Dawson –

Its very focused on Practice accounting I wish there was course more focused on accountants working in Proctice but overally it gave me a good basis.

Lots of useful information. I would say it is more geared towards people working in practice. Some more information on the practical application of SORP would be helpful for accountants working within charities.

I think the course covered sufficient information needed
