This course will enable you to

  • Consider the three separate IFRS areas regarding accounting for financial instruments
  • Recognise and measure financial instruments
  • Understand how to deal with financial instruments that are transferred in full or part, or items that are derecognised
  • Understand the major features of disclosure in IFRS 7

About the course

The treatment of financial instruments can sometimes be very complex and it is necessary to have a clear understanding of the rules involved within the IFRSs to apply them properly. Getting this wrong could have a big impact on the financial statements.

There are three separate IFRS areas to consider regarding the accounting for financial instruments. IAS 32 deals with the presentation of financial instruments, IFRS 7 with their disclosure, and IFRS 9 with their recognition and measurement. These Standards need to be seen as something of a package.

    Could be more detailed.

  2. Uliana Kudrya

  3. Rosalind Wright

I would have liked a worked example of hedge effectiveness. There are a few wording issues. The McGarry example goes on to talk about Oxbridge.

  4. Mark Dunthorne

Some examples of Financial Instruments would be useful as would examples of the actual accounting entries on example financial statements.

  5. Niall Vince

Found the course very informative but wish there was more practical examples from lecturer. Maybe having a fake entity that lecturer uses for each section to demonstrate how the standards would affect the entity.

  7. Simon Anderson

Good overview on financial instruments with some helpful disclosure highlights. Quite a bit on hedging which I never see, but I suppose it’s good to know what is there.

  8. Gethin Griffiths

Initial Review: June 2021 (1/5) – I will need to work through some more practical examples. The course needs to be more interactive to embed concepts and maintain interest. This is a dry subject. Updated Review: Dec 2023 (1/5) – As bad as it was originally. Better explanations of the rules etc on Youtube videos.

    super

  10. Salome Sewagodimo

Amazing, the content is informative and well-structured and explained

  11. Richard Coward

I felt this was a good general overview of the key aspects of the standards and a refresher of the key points. As the author pointed out, this is a very complicated and extensive area of IFRS and the topics as a whole couldn’t be dealt with in 4 hours. I do think, though, it would be very helpful to have illustrations and examples of the application of the rules and example calculations. Perhaps this could be covered in more focused CPD modules on specific topics (e.g. Hedging)

  12. Paul Nugent

It was an interesting course that covered the basics of Financial Instruments. The topic itself is very detailed and complex so it is difficult to cover everything in detail. Overall, I am happy I joined the course.
